In general, the abrasive cannot be used for grinding alone, but only after adding lubricant and other auxiliary materials can the grinding process be carried out.
Lubricants in grinding and polishing can not only adjust the uniform load of the abrasive, stick the abrasive, dilute the abrasive, and cool and lubricate the abrasive, but also play a chemical role in preventing scratches on the workpiece surface and promoting oxidation.
There are many kinds of lubricants with different characteristics, which can be roughly classified into the following two categories:
(1) Liquid lubricant: kerosene, gasoline, engine oil, turbine oil, lard, industrial glycerin, alcohol, soapy water and water are commonly used.
(2) Solid lubricant: Stearic acid, stearin and paraffin are commonly used, and oleic acid and fatty acid are also used to make grinding paste.
In order to change the viscosity of the lubricant and strengthen its chemical and other auxiliary functions, appropriate turbine oil, lard, industrial glycerin, stearic acid, fatty acid and oleic acid are often added. As for the specific addition or not, or how much, it should be determined according to the specific process requirements of grinding. No or very little is added in coarse grinding, while turbine oil and stearic acid should be added in fine grinding. In addition, when using soapy water or water for grinding and polishing, a small amount of anti rust agent should be added. For example, when grinding the thread ring gauge, 5% sodium nitrite is added as the lubricant.
